114 mpi 5 door. Are fuel tanks interchangeable ? The diesel ones new are lots cheaper and look the same. Do 3 door ones fit 5 door cars ?

No, cant fit diesel tank to petrol or visa versa, Diesel tanks are basic
inside as regards fuel pickup etc, whereas Mpi tanks have internal pump,
in a fuel bowl/tray which integrates with returning fuel to keep pump
supplied with fuel.
3 door and 5 door tanks are the same, just filler necks are different.
Try finding a galvanised tank for a mpi made by a company called 'Spectra'
I fitted one to my Gti, I managed to fit the fuel return venturi system from
a MGf/TF fuel pump assy to ensure that pump swirl-pot was always full,
just like it does on the MGF/TF.

New tank arrived today. Been sat in an old boys garage for a number of years. £50 delivered and guess what, it is indeed a spectra.
