1997 114 GSI water pump

Post by Davidh1041 »

Please can any body confirm for me what water pump should be fitted to this car? It's a 1.4 8 valve petrol. I recently bought it and there was a whirling noise from the cam belt area. So i bought a new cam belt, tensioner and water pump. When i took the covers off i found it had had the water pump replaced, so just changed the cam belt and tensioner. On starting the engine the noise was still there, so decided that the new pump must be faulty. When i then took it off and compared it with the new pump i noticed that the sprocket did not have tapered splines like the new one. So i replaced the pump with the new one assuming that this was the problem The noise has now gone, but the cam belt runs on the engine face of the sprockets, on all other Metro's i have had the cam belt tends to run near the cover side of the sprockets. I assume that it is running into the tapper on the water pump.
I have contacted different parts suppliers and they are quoting me two pumps for this car. FWP 1491 and FWP 1492. The 1491 pump is the tapered sprocket, the 1492 is the sraight cut sprocket. I always understood that the straight cut pump was for the 16 valve engine only. Does anybody know which pump i need as i do not want to risk damage to the belt with the consequential engine damage that would cause. Thanks David

as far as I can find out there are two different kinds of waterpumps for the metro, a 8v one and a 16v one. they doesn't look massively different.

the partnumbers FWP 1491 and FWP 1492 is first line car part numbers and not rover numbers.

8v

the FWP 1491 number leads me to this one

16v

the FWP 1492 number leads me to this pump

Thanks Dotmatrix, yes that's the conclusion i came to, so i am sure that i have now fitted the correct pump, 1491 for the 8 valve engine. Just don't know why the cam belt has decided to ride along the engine side of the sprockets instead of the more normal position on the outside next to the covers?
Thanks David

Just a quick update, fitted the FWP 1492 pump which is the recommended pump for my car and the cam belt still runs close to the engine block. However it is quite, so leaving it alone. Thanks for your reply's. Regards David
