1.1 carb stinks of fumes on tickover and runs rich solved

My 1993 1.1 carb version stank of exhaust fumes and ran rich since I got it, and nothing that I could do would correct this. Every time anyone got in/out they would comment on the terrible fuminess of the air around the car, and although it gave the symptoms of running rich, it actually drove quite well.
The solution? - the diaphragm in the enrichment device at the side of the carb was just a lattice of holes. This had the effect of not weakening the mixture at tickover as you cannot move a holed diaphragm with a vacuum. I got a NOS part (£25) from eBay and it now works fine - as a 29k car should. Just had one of the (new Bosch) plugs out - now it's settled down and they are perfect. So if you have a carb car with a rich smell at tickover check your diaphragm - the enclosure is held onto the side of the carb body with 4 torx screws - and watch you don't lost the spring inside.
