right I did post something similar on the old forum but now we're all here though I'd ask again. I have purchased a 98 R100 with a rotten body but it has a running 160 vvc in. now the issue is it starts and drives but the key fob does not work I have replaced the battery in it but still nothing and I would like an alarm for my daily. how would I sort this or should I just get a new ecu fob and alarm box?

Giving it still runs, it may have an unlocked ecu (kmaps retune?) if you want the fob and alarm to work etc it would be easiest just to replace the 5as box with a matching fob

so by the sound of it I can just stick a 5as and fob that works in the car with the unlocked ecu? if so that's great as I can use my cars original ones and just put the engine and ecu in and I should still have central locking and an alarm but no immobilizer?

yep thats right, for example rover 115 diesel dont have ecu's but still have the 5as and fob for starter immobilizer and central locking
